Crestus Howell Moss was a farmer and owned slaves, he was born in Loudoun County, VA. He came from Virginia to North Carolina with his parents before 1805. He later moved from Rutherford County, N.C. to Haywood County, N.C. about 1806/07, and then from Haywood County, N.C. to Macon County, N.C. about 1829 and from Macon County, N.C. to Tusquitee Valley, Clay County, North Carolina about 1835 where he lived on the Old Suttermire Place near his son Howell until he died in 1845. Daniel Poston was born in the Poston log house north of Shelby. He remained a bachelor and helped care for his mother until age 48. He then married Margaret, aged 18. Her brother had earlier married Daniel's sister, Rachel. Monroe and Rachel later became owners of the Poston homeplace Daniel was a millwright, mechanic, farmer, and at one time owned a cotton gin. Although he suffered a grea loss through investment in Confederate bonds, he was able to leave his young wife a comfortable estate. In his will he instructed his wife to "school the children as best she could" and contrary to most testators, he left provision for her to inherit one-fourth of his estate even if she remarried. | Poston, Daniel (I879)

David enlisted with the "Sandy Run Yellow Jackets" at Philadelphia Church in Rutherford County on September 2, 1861 along with brothers John H., Wiley, and Lorenzo. The unit was designated Company B, 34th Regiment NC and entered Confederate service at Camp Mangum on January 1, 1862. In late April the the 34th was sent to Virginia where it was eventually assigned to Pender's Brigade of A.P. Hill's division.
After Lee's Army of Northern Virginia turned back the Federals at Fredericksburg in December 1862 the Sandy Run Yellow Jackets and rest of the 34th went into winter quarters at Camp Gregg on the Rappahannock. David was killed in action on June 14, 1864 while the 34th was engaged in a brief skirmish at Riddell's Shop near Petersburg, Va. | Bridges, David (I7680)
