    Origionally named Ellen Rose. Her name was changed sometime after her grand mother Mary Wellmon Gardner died in Nov 1927 to Mary Ellen in order to be named after both her grandmothers.

    Obitituary:

    SHELBY - Ellen Poston Simpson, 90, died Friday, Aug. 26, 2016, at Hospice at Wendover.

    A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Raleigh and Myrle Gardner Poston. She was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband J.P. Simpson; and son, Bruce Simpson.

    She is survived by her son, Larry Simpson of New House; grandchildren, Gary Simpson and wife Lisa of Earl, and Lisa Triplett and husband J.D. of Shelby; great-grandchildren, Brody, Holly, Harley, Jay, Alexis, and Kimmie; and great-great-granddaughter, Meadow Jane Hawkins

    The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 29, 2016, at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.

    Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. on, Monday, Aug. 29, 2016, at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Morris officiating.

    Burial will follow in Elizabeth Baptist Church Cemetery.

    James moved to the Wilson plantation sometime after marrying Tom Wilson's daughter, Sarah. He managed the Hotel at Wilson Springs after the death of Thomas Wilson.

    Sadly his monument is missing. There is a monument at Elizabeth Baptist Church that gives the location of his burial place.

    Notes:

    From Clevelamd Gardner's notes: Thomas Gardner like many others in Cleveland County enlisted in the Confererate Army at the beginning of the Civil War. He was wounded at the battle of Sharpsburg and his injury was serious enough that he had to return home for a time to recover. Once strong again he returned to his company. He was seen to fall of a wound at the battle at Gettysburg. He was never seen or heard from since. After first considered wounded and missing he was later declared killed in action. He was probably burried in a mass grave there.

    Military Service:
    Promoted to Sgt 1 Aug 1862. Present and accounted for until wounded at Sharpsburg, MD on 17 Sep 1862. Returned home to recover from his wounds. Returned to service Jan-Feb 1863. Missing and probably killed at Gettysburg. Mary, his widow, applied for pension 27 Jun 1885.

    Notes:

    From P. Cleveland Gardner's notes: He bought a farm just South of his father's homestead upon which he and his wife settled and reared a large family. Some years later he erected a large two story house just West of where he first settled, which residence is occupied by his son and known as the Wellmon Homestead. His father died will still in the prime of life and left a large family, and he administered upon the estate of his father and purchased the interest of the several heirs and took care of his mother who lived to of old age. He is buried in the family plot with his father.

    Military Service:
    William served in the military in 56th Regiment NC Infantry CO F The 56th Infantry Regiment completed its organization in July 1862, at Camp Magnum, near Raleigh, NC. Its members were recruited in the counties of Camden, Cumberland, Pasquotank, Northampton, Orange, Cleveland, Alexander, Rutherford, and Mechlenburg. It fought at Gum Swamp, Plymouth, and Drewry"s Bluff, endured the hardships of the Petersburg trenches south of the James River, and saw action around Appomattox. The regiment had 149 men captured at Gum Swamp, lost 4 killed and 84 wounded at Plymouth, and reported 90 causualties at Ware Bottom Church. Many were disabled at Sayler's Creek, and only 9 Officers and 62 men surrendered with the army of Northern Virginia.
